Author John T. Edge at The Market at Pepper Place

BIRMINGHAM, Alabama -- Southern foodways scholar and writer John T. Edge will be at Birmingham's Pepper Place Saturday Market this weekend to sign copies of "Cornbread Nation 7: The Best of Southern Food Writing."

Edge, director of the Southern Foodways Alliance in Oxford, Miss., also will join Jim 'N Nick's Bar-B-Q executive chef Drew Robinson for a cooking demonstration, as they prepare a greens-driven gumbo using seasonal ingredients from local farmers and purveyors.

The book signing and cooking demo starts at 9 a.m. on the chef's stage between 29th Street South and the main parking lot at Pepper Place.

Edited by Francis Lam, "Cornbread Nation 7" is the most recent edition in the SFA's collection of the South's best food writing and features such writers as Jeffrey Steingarten of Vogue, Brett Anderson of the Times-Picayune in New Orleans, and Ann Taylor Pittman of Cooking Light. Copies of the book will be for sale at the farmers market Saturday.

In addition to his responsibilities with the SFA, Edge is a contributing editor for Garden & Gun magazine and a columnist for the Oxford American. His books include "Southern Belly: The Ultimate Food Lover's Companion to the South" and "The Truck Food Cookbook."
