Pepper Place Highlights from 2014

Exciting happenings took place in the Pepper Place District in 2014, serving as a filming location and home to some of the states biggest events. In this article we highlight key successes and accomplishments from the year, and look forward for more to come in 2015.  

Pepper Place Joins the World of Reality TV.  

In February 2014, a casting call was held for a reality show featuring Heidi Elnora, which aired as a pilot program on TLC, July 2014. "Bride By Design," gives an inside look of the wedding gown adventures experienced by brides, and of course features the celebrity wedding dress designer helping brides find the gown of their dreams. Due to the positive response, a second casting call was held in September, earning a spot in the official line up for the network.  Season one of Bride By Design will air spring 2015.

The Market Kicked Off the 14th Season

The Alabama Department of Tourism recognizes the Pepper Place Farmers Market as one of the state's top 10 attractions in 2014.  The market was also named one of the south's top 10 markets by Deep South Magazine.  Attendance significantly increased in 2014, with approximately 5,000 more weekly visitors than previous years.  

Birmingham Fashion Week Creates Opportunity for a Local Teen Designer.

The fourth annual BFW took over the streets of Pepper Place once again in April.  Among the participating designers, one Rising Design Star winner from the 2014 event, went on to participate in one of Lifetime’s fashion competitions, PROJECT RUNWAY: THREADS, and was selected as the winner of the show’s first season.

New Businesses and a Major Publication Come to The District. 

Country Living Magazine, a publication of Hearst Magazines, moved their headquarters from New York to Pepper Place in 2014. Also new to the district is Context A3, Haskin Jones, LLC and Monarch Realty.

Pepper Place Hits the Big Screen! 

The movie MOMS' NIGHT OUT, filmed in Pepper Place, hit theaters on Mother’s Day 2014, showcasing our favorite coffee house, the Red Cat

New Restaurant in Pepper Place

In May 2014, Chris Hastings announced his plans to open his second restaurant, Ovenbird, in Pepper Place, which Food & Wine Magazine selected as one of the top eight amazing new restaurants around country. The restuarant will open in 2015. 

Pepper Place Hosts "The Art of Alabama Food" 

Showcasing 36 dishes from locally owned restaurants across the state, Pepper Place was designated to host this annual exhibit.  Birmingham chefs featured included James Lewis, Chris Hastings and Frank Stitt.  



National Geographic Traveler Magazine Gives Recognition to Pepper Place

In the August/September issue of National Geographic Traveler Magazine, the district was commended for being comprised of local businesses versus national chains. Ona's Music Room, a popular jazz venue, is credited for bringing amazing music to Birmingham.


The Annual Holiday Block Party Set A New Standard in 2014

The Pepper Place Holiday Block Party  was bigger than ever last year, as we partnered with the Community Food Bank of Central Alabama, filling two large barrels with food donations. 


More Changes to the Pepper Place Restaurant Scene

Before the holiday season, James Lewis announced his decision to merge sister restaurants Vittoria and Bettola into one restaurant.  The newly renovated space and new menu will be unveiled early 2015.  

Exciting District Improvements and Additions

The parking lot next to the Dr. Pepper building received a facelift and a beautiful patio addition in 2014.  Upward lighting was also added around the trees, and logo banners were added to the lightpoles to better identify the district.
