Throughout September, the Saturday chef demos at the Market at Pepper Place will be hosted by Birmingham Chapter members of Les Dames d’Escoffier, an international organization for the top women in food, wine, and hospitality. Every Saturday at 9am, a different team of Dames will show how to make a delicious and fresh, in-season dish.
To celebrate the amazing service industry women in our great city, take the Tour de Dames this Saturday, September 16th. Here’s what we recommend:
8:15am-8:30am
Arrive at the Market and grab a coffee from the Red Cat (owned by Erin Isbell) tent in front of Richard Tubb, and a scone or croissant from Continental Bakery (owned by Carole Griffin).
8:55am
Head to the Chef Demo area on 29th street.
9-9:20am
Learn how to make a delicious seasonal recipe from the chef/owner of Copper Pot Kitchen and the soon-to-be-open Za’atar Bar Ashley Tarver and food writer Christiana Roussel, with help from Jeff State culinary student Daphne Jones. Find out amazing facts about women in the food industry and cheer for the ones who have been “breaking the Pyrex ceiling” in Birmingham and beyond.
9:20am-9:45am
Wander over to 29th Street and the Cantina parking lot and buy a few food items and unique gifts that catch your eye.
9:45am-10:30am
Head over to OvenBird Restaurant for mimosas and a delicious brunch. It’s hard to beat the Eggs Benedict or the Cornmeal Hoecake with fruit. Try the oysters on the half shell with gin & tonic mignonette as a starter. Dee-lish! Take a selfie with your friends in front of the late blooming flowers outside Charlie Thigpen’s.
10:30am-Noon
Walk around the main parking lot and pick up some of the beautiful, fresh produce before it closes at noon. On your way out, pick up a t-shirt, hat, book or other Market swag at the Info Tent – remember the Market was founded and run by an all-female staff. Yay! It’s a non-profit and needs your support to keep operating!
The businesses of the following vendors/farmers are all (co-)owned/run by women and will be there 9/16 so shop their tents and support them!
